Starting School

Emmanuel Junior Academy converted to an Academy joining the Diocese of Sheffield Academies Trust (DSAT) on 1st February 2015. The Academy Trust is the Admission Authority. The day to day responsibility for admissions is delegated to the school who work closely with the Local Authority and are also advised in their responsibility by the statutory requirements, the Sheffield Diocesan Board of Education and their own commitment to the local community.

There are four year groups (Years 3-6) and the admission number for each is 60. Children will usually be admitted during the autumn term following their 7th birthday. Where parents/carers wish to defer entry or request that the child attends part-time, the request will be considered where it appears to be in the best interest of the child. Admission applications can be made at any point during the year through an In Year Transfer process.

Most, but not all, Year 3 children are admitted from Waterthorpe Nursery/Infant School, although others join us from other infant schools. You will be advised in the March/April by letter from Sheffield City Council which school your child has been allocated. Information about how to appeal the allocation decision will be included in the letter.

Before children start school, parents/carers are invited to meet the staff and other children, and a welcome pack is given to the children and parents at this visit. Parents/carers are also offered a home visit by the Class Teacher and Teaching Assistant.

If children are anxious or unhappy they will not make progress so it is important to make the transition into Junior School, from another educational setting, as smooth and friendly as possible for the child, parents and staff.

Do You Need Help or Advice?

We are here to help and we are all very approachable and willing to support parents/carers with any difficulties they may feel. We can support form filling and advise on any concerns parents/carers have when their child starts school.

Our office staff and our Learning Mentor are able to give clear advice about all admissions procedures.

Older Children

Parents who wish to enrol their children to older year groups should contact Miss Lauren Bagshaw, our Senior Admin Officer, who will always be pleased to help. The school works with the  Sheffield Local Authority to co-ordinate in-year transfers for Emmanuel Junior Academy and will advise on all matters, including the appeals process.
